Transmissions can sometimes be very costly to repair if they require a complete rebuild. When they require a rebuild, you are often asked to spend quite a bit of money to have a problem fixed that you probably don't understand very well.
Transmission Repair Cost
Getting an accurate price quote for a remanufactured or rebuilt transmission is important. There are many different types of transmissions and each type requires different parts and different rebuild kits.
When a transmission requires an overhaul, there are generally three options that you have. The first is to remove your existing transmission and rebuild it, then put the same, newly rebuilt unit back in your car. The second option is to replace your existing unit with a remanufactured transmission. The third is to replace your existing unit with a used transmission.
Rebuild / Rebuilt Transmission
In an overhaul typically done at a transmission shop (also known as rebuilding a transmission), the transmission is removed from the vehicle and completely disassembled with the parts laid out on a workbench. Each hard part is inspected for wear and damage and then either cleaned in a special cleaning solution, or replaced with another part depending on its condition. Parts that have friction surfaces, such as bands and clutches are replaced as are all seals and gaskets. The torque converter is also replaced, usually with a remanufactured one. Upgrades are typically performed to fix any original design defects from the year of manufacture. Automobile manufacturers often make upgrade kits available to transmission shops to resolve these design defects.
Remanufactured Transmission
The remanufacturing process brings a transmission back to as "new" as possible (original equipment). Most internal transmission parts are replaced and any worn parts are brought back to original production specifications. Technical service bulletins are checked and performed. The remanufactured transmission is fully tested and usually comes with a 3 year or longer warranty. There are several brands of remanufactured transmissions sold by auto parts stores and repair shops.
Used / Junkyard Transmissions
Used transmissions normally have high miles and no guarantees. Added to that, the exact make, model, engine size and computer coded transmission has to be installed in your vehicle. Many times, you will be responsible for the labor costs (several hundred dollars) and fluid costs (around $50) of removal and reinstallation if the first unit does not work properly. For every unit that does not work properly, the costs of installing a junkyard unit will double. If the unit is found to have high mileage (there is no way to tell), the unit will fail at any time.
Choosing An Option
When choosing an option, try to be as informed as possible. There are many honest transmission shops and remanufactured transmission companies. But just remember one last piece of information: "Cheaper is not always better".

Selecting Gear Lube for Your Engine Parts

Gear lube is the type of motor oil used for transmissions, differentials, and transfer cases in trucks, automobiles, and other heavy equipment in order to prevent metal-to-metal contact that can cause severe damage. It has a higher viscosity, or thickness, than regular motor oil. This helps the lubricant to move through the moving parts when there are no pumps present to push it through the system, which is the case with much of the heavier equipment.
After viscosity, it is important to consider which type of gear lube you need. There are many different types, but most fall into these three broad categories:
Rust and Oxidation Inhibited (R&O).
This type does not include antiscuff additives or other agents, but it does a good job of preventing corrosion and excess foam. It is designed for moving parts that operate at high speeds but with low, consistent loads. It is not intended for use in engines that are prone to spikes in activity.
Antiscuff.
This is also known as an extreme pressure (EP) lubricant, and it performs far better than R&O oils. The antiscuff lubricants contain special additives that make them stronger and able to carry larger loads. One of these common antiwear additives is sulfur phosphorous, which works to alter the machine surface to prevent the adhesive in boundary lubricants from wearing away. Other additives include molybdenum-disulfide (moly), graphite, and borates. An advantage to these additives, compared to sulfur phosphorous compounds, is that their activation does not depend on high surface temperatures. However, sulfur phosphorus additives can eventually harm machine surfaces, especially yellow metals. Engines that perform well with antiscuff gear lube are those that operate under heavy loads or at slow speeds, as well as those that have regular spikes in activity.
Compound.
This type of lube is mixed with a synthetic fatty acid to increase its strength and lubricity. It is commonly used in worm gear applications, where the gears move in a regular sliding motion and are built from metals that may corroded if antiscuff lubricants are used. Compound lubricant is also known as cylinder oil, since it was originally used for steam cylinder machinery.
Finally, you will want to choose a base oil that's suited to your particular equipment and application.
Mineral Base Oils: This type is suitable for most uses. It allows for greater film thickness in certain applications. However, the inherent properties of this type make it unsuitable for many high-temperature applications. After the refinement process, many inorganic compounds remain. Three in particular-oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen-can allow oxidation, acid development, and sludge formation.
Synthetic Oils: This type is an engineered product designed to generate a chemical reaction based on the machine's pressure and temperature. The high-purity chemical components have strong molecular bonds, so they are less likely to break down or allow oxidation. These strong bonds also keep the lube from getting too thick when it's cold or too thin when it's hot. They generally offer more consistent protection in sliding applications.

When considering the type of gear lube for your vehicle or heavy equipment, the owner's manual is the first place to find the recommended viscosity, type, and base oil. Alternatively, a service professional should be able to recommend something for your machine, based on the type of equipment and your use. Having the right lubricant is essential to keeping your machines running efficiently and effectively for many years.

The Proton MPV will begin on-road testing from the 12th of September 2008 onwards, so we'll be able to spot it on our local roads and hopefully get some nice clear photos possibly from mid-September onwards. It will be launched to the public in March 2009.

Proton sources have confirmed that the Proton MPV will initially come with the 125 horsepower Campro CPS found in the highline GEN2 CPS facelift. The car will ride on 15 inch wheels which should be easy on the fuel consumption as well as tyre change bills as smaller tyres are cheaper. 125hp is far from sprinty on a heavy vehicle especially with all 7 seats occupied, but it is still more powerful than the 1.3, 1.5 and 1.6 liter engines that almost all B-segment Japanese MPVs have to make do with. A turbocharged Campro engine is said to be in the works but according to inside sources if any other engine options other than the CPS engine are to be available for the Proton MPV, next in line is more likely to be a turbodiesel engine. In fact, Proton may have played a part in (successfully) lobbying for the recent drop of diesel road tax rates to the same level as petrol road tax rates.

What is oversteer?
Oversteer describes the condition while negotiating a turn where the rear tires lose traction while the front tires stay in contact with the road. If uncorrected, the back of the car slides towards the outside of the turn and spins out (usually resulting in a crash). Oversteer can be produced in several ways, including tapping the brake, abruptly letting off the throttle, or by executing a sharp downshift that disrupts tire/road contact. Drifting is basically a controlled form of oversteer.

How did drifting get started?
Oversteering has been a common practice in motorsports for many, many years. It has been most commonly used in oval dirt track racing, touring car racing, and rally racing. NASCAR drivers drift sometimes, except they call it being "loose in the turns." Drifting as its own area of motorsports began over 30 years ago in Japan, where the All-Japan Touring Car Championship races first began popularizing drifting as a racing skill. During the last 10 years or so, its popularity has spread worldwide. Professional Japanese drivers are now so popular that they are recognized celebrities!

My ride is front wheel drive. Can I drift?Technically, yes...although all pro drifters drive rear wheel drive cars. Drifting a FWD car usually means a brief jerk of the e-brake handle to get things in motion. This technique, commonly known as "ass dragging," is not used by many RWD drifters, but it's the only consistent way to make a FWD car drift. When approaching a turn, simply pull the e-brake to cause traction loss. Oh yeah...don't forget to hold in the release button, or things will get very ugly, very fast!

Today myself and Brett Castle went to Rockingham to test an experimental tyre for Khumo Tyres. It's a Kumho Estca, but with a difference. Due to some very clever chemical reaction or gypsy voodoo or something, it gives off a red smoke when spun up

There were 6 of these tyres in Europe, and I really wouldn't care to guess exactly how much they currently cost to develop and manufacture in such a small number. Needless to say there are now only 2 of these tyres in Europe, thanks to myself and Brett 'testing' them thoroughly

They are a 280 treadwear rating, and built around Khumo's road legal/track tyre, just for reference, Toyo's very sticky Proxy T1-S has a TWR of 280, so these really do have some traction. They are currently only available in 255/40/17, so we had to fit them on to a set of R33 GTR wheels. Initially in testing we were having massive understeer issues due to the extremely soft compound of these tyres, but once they were worn in a little, things started to come together nicely.

After our short scrubbing session, it was time to do the after lunch Drifting demo for the small invite only crowd. We used the main staight, in the same way you may have seen HKS Europe's S15, Nomura's R34GTT and Kazama's S15, with some very close twin drifting in the baking heat for about 10 minutes, this equates to four dead red tyres, and 140degree oil temperatures, see the flame pictures for proof

We had a great day, and would like to thank the GT Battle guys for arranging it, and Khumo Tyres for inviting us, but also for acknowledging our fantastic sport and pushing forward with new ideas, now let's get those Orange versions under development.

Ueda Scores First Win at Sepang Circuit

Two-time world 125cc Grand Prix runner-up Noboru Ueda stoday cored his first career win at Sepang Circuit; winning the Honda Asean Cup at the Malaysian Super Series (MSS) to supplement the 125cc GP victories at Shah Alam Circuit and Johor Circuit, Pasir Gudang in 1994 and 1998 respectively.

“I am very happy. I can now say I got a complete set of wins in Malaysia. I could not do it at the GP but today’s victory in this competition is still as good,” said the 40-year old Ueda, who won the second round of the Honda Asean Cup, which was incorporated for the first time in the MSS.

Unlike the highly powered, fully modified 125cc GP machines that Ueda had used previously, Ueda competed against riders from Thailand, Malaysia and India on a one-make Honda Wave S125 production bikes on an equal basis; and against young aspiring riders.

“It was drizzling and it was actually very difficult race. I just use my experience studying lap by lap; but I guessed the other riders were also doing the same thing as we were all groupped together until the end,” said Ueda, winner 13 Grand Prix, 39 podium positions and 19 pole positions from 160 races.

Now a trainer with Honda-owned Suzuka Circuit Racing School, Ueda said that nothing had changed in his attitude and approach when racing as he fought all the way to take the checkered in the eight-lap race.

“I really had to push in the last lap to win, it’s very satisfying to finally win here in Sepang because I had always like this track and I had always liked this country,” said Ueda, who retired from the 125cc World Grand Prix in 2002; finishing second overall twice in 1994 and 1997.

The Honda Asean Cup was as a one-off event this year; but is likely to be included in a full season next year. Round 1 was held at the Nakhonchairsi Circuit near Bangkok on July 6 while the next round would be run in Japan in Motegi on November 3 before the final round in Batangas, Phillipines on January 8.

On a day interupted by heavy downpour and drizzling rain, 2003 superbike champion Brent Odgers moved closer to his second Malaysian Super Series title as his closest rival Omar Ali Abdullah fizzled around the wet track.

Representing Team Pineapple Motorsports, the Australian won the opening race and then rode to a safe second place behind Finland’s Jussi Hoikka in a wet Race 2 to collect a total of 45 points and installed as winner for Round 3.

While defending champion Yasuhiro Kuhara again forced to skip the round due to financial constraints, Omar failed to finish Race 1 with mechanical problems and only managed second place in the second race to add only 10 points to his total haul.

With two more rounds to go, Odgers now has 133 points and a 54-point advantage over second placed Juissi Hoikka of Finland, who second overall today and garnering a total point of 79 points.

Like Odgers, Ahmad Nashrul Baharuddin also scored an identical score of a first and second placing in Round 3 to further enhance his position at the top of the 135cc Production Bike Championship.

After three rounds, Ahmad Nashrul now has 120 points; opening an advantage of 47-point advantage over second-placed Safrizan Buang, who collected 41 points from the concluded Round 3.

In the 600cc Supersports Championship, India’s Pretham Moses ruled in the wet to win both races to move to the top of the point standings with 123 points.

In the Kawasaki Cup, Mohd Fairuz Murad was the winner of Round 3; collecting 45 points over the two races with Khairul Muzali coming in second with 26 points and Rizal Jantan in third with 25 points.

In the Aprilia Cup, Chia Choo Keat’s winning streak came to an end when he was sensationally disqualified in Race 2 for ignoring three calls for a drive-through penalty after winning the first race.

Beaten by Amir Hamzah in the race, Khoo Keat’s time of 18 minutes 31.297 seconds was actually good enough for a second placing until the race stewards came in with a disqualification order.

Drifting is a form of cornering which uses controlled slipping of the tires to give a more showy and sometimes faster turn speeds. With grip driving, the key is to go slow to fast around the corner whereas with drifting, you try to maintain a constant speed around the corner and come out of it faster. These are some types of drifting which are possible with a MiniZ (there is no precise way to do each, but this provides you with a guide on how to perform your own drifts):

Power Over - When entering a corner, use full throttle to produce heavy oversteer through the turn

Faint Drift - Steer the car towards the outside of a turn and then use steering traction to throw the head of the car into the inside of the turn

Swaying Drift - A slow side-to-side faint like drift where the rear end sways back and forth down a straight

Kansei Drift - When at racing speeds and entering a high speed corner, quickly take your finger off the gas to initiate a mild oversteer and then balance the drift through steering and reapplied gas

Jump Drift - Allow the inside rear tire to bounce over the apex of the curb such that it loses traction, resulting in oversteer

Long Side Drift - Use reverse and steering to put the car side ways at a high angle (almost totally sideways) and hold this when entering the corner.

During a drift, speed will slowly bleed away, so enter a corner faster than you would normally with grip racing. You usually have to prepare for a drift way before the turn to give your car the right momentum and attitude. You must also know that not all corners are meant to be drifted around. A good racer must know when to drift and when to grip through it. I also depends on where your opponents are on the track.

The car must be set up properly for you to be able to drift. For example, you can help your rear wheels lock up during a turn so that it will swing out by tightening your ball differential. Whenever you are attempting to throw or change the direction of the car suddenly, you will need to steer quickly. If the steering range dial on your controller is too small, you may not have enough steering angle to throw your car. Tire settings are also important. Depending on the type of drift, you may want the front to have more grip than the back or vice versa. It depends on how you want to drift your car and our ability to control it.
